Happiness. It is a word that carries so much meaning, yet it often feels out of reach. On this International Day of Happiness, we are reminded of how essential happiness is—not just as a fleeting emotion, but as something we all deserve. And yet, if you are like many of the people I have worked with, happiness might feel complicated. Maybe it is tangled with guilt. “Do I really deserve this?” buried under stress or drowned out by that inner critic whispering, “You should be happier by now.”
In our busy lives, we often overlook the small moments that bring authentic joy—a warm cup of tea, a quiet walk in nature, or a moment of stillness amidst the chaos. Often, negative self-talk or lingering doubt can cloud our sense of peace and fulfillment.
But here is something I would like you to remember: True happiness is not about forcing a smile or chasing a perfect, unbroken sense of joy. It is about building a kind and compassionate relationship with yourself. It’s about nurturing the courage to heal the parts of you that feel neglected or stuck and finding small moments of joy along the way.
How Can We Cultivate Inner Happiness?
Here are a few gentle ways to begin fostering happiness from within:
Practice Gratitude Take a moment each day to reflect on one thing you are grateful for. It could be as simple as a warm cup of tea or the kindness of a stranger. Gratitude shifts our focus to what is going well, even on the hardest days.
Be Present Happiness often hides in the small moments we overlook—watching the sunset, feeling the breeze on your skin, or laughing with a friend. Pause, notice, and savor these moments.
Be Kind to Yourself Happiness grows when we let go of self-criticism and replace it with self-compassion. Treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would offer a loved one.
Connect with Others While happiness starts within, it thrives when shared. Reach out to someone you care about, or spend time with a community that uplifts you.
Pursue What Brings You Joy Sometimes, we lose touch with the activities or experiences that light us up. Reconnect with something that brings you joy—whether it is painting, dancing, walking in nature, or simply taking time for yourself.

Healing and happiness go hand in hand. As we work through the parts of ourselves that feel broken, misunderstood, or stuck, we create space for joy and fulfillment to flourish. This is not an overnight process—it is a journey. But every step you take, no matter how small, brings you closer to a deeper sense of peace and contentment.
